How to Place your Mirror in your Home for Best Energy Flow with Feng Shui

Updated: Jun 8, 2023

Mirror Mirror, on the wall....where do I place you after all?

In Feng Shui, mirrors are a common cure used to promote harmony and balance in a home. However, it is important to be mindful of their placement and use.

Working with many clients and their homes, I get it. Feng Shui can be confusing. Where do I place the mirror? Why can't my mirror face my front door? How do I know if I used the mirror correctly?

First off, mirrors help to reflect and amplify energy (known as qi) in a home or space. Knowing this bit of info alone can be extremely helpful in determining the placement of a mirror in your home.

But since I am your holistic home helper, here are a few key things to consider when using mirrors in Feng Shui.

Placement

In Feng Shui, there are some rooms that are ideal for mirrors, and some that aren't. Mirrors should be avoided in areas that are meant to support yin qi, such as a bedroom. The main purpose of these areas is to relax and create calm energy, and adding a mirror to these locations creates more movement of energy. Essentially the opposite intention. Another area to avoid placing a mirror is directly across from your front door. The front door is an important area of the home for energy to enter, and since mirrors reflect and redirect, this energy is immediately sent back out of the home.

So where are good areas? The dining room and living room are ideal areas of the home to place a mirror. These are often more yang or active areas, and connect to good fortune and family. Adding a mirror to these locations can help amplify the energy.

Size

Size matters. With mirrors that is. The size of your mirror should be in proportion with the size of the space you place it in. For example, a large mirror in a small room can make the space feel overwhelmed and offer too much energy for a space, while a small mirror in a large room does little to help amplify the energy.

Shape

Shape is another important aspect that helps influence the energy in Feng Shui. For mirrors, round and oval mirrors are best, as they help in dispersing the energy more evenly and harmoniously. Square and rectangle mirrors create a bit more movement in a space. You will want to access the space/room to determine the best shape for the mirror.

Material

In Feng Shui, the five elements are a key principle and are essential to achieving harmony and balance to a home. Each of the elements contains a different set of energies, and depending on your space, your intention, and your own energy, can help in achieving this balance.

Mirrors connect to the element of water, due to their reflective qualities. However, based on the frame, you can enhance other energies within your space. Metal mirrors help to bring clarity and focus, while wood mirrors work to bring growth, prosperity, and kindness.

If you're interested in incorporating the use of mirrors into your home with Feng Shui, working with a Feng Shui Consultant can help in applying these principles in the correct way to your space to promote harmony and balance. Remember, the journey of having a holistic home and one that supports your health, happiness, and well-being is full of many steps, and sometimes reaching out for help and assistance can help speed up this process.
