Is your Staircase supporting your Energy? - What your Stairs mean in Feng Shui

Updated: Jun 8, 2023

There is a little joke I heard with renters and first time home buyers. It is that you know you've become an adult when you have a home that has stairs in it. Now it is true not all homes today have stairs, but if you find yourselves in a home that has multiple levels, you might want to consider the importance of the staircase. Especially when it comes to energy.

Staircases are an integral part of many homes, providing a functional connection between different levels of a house. In Feng Shui, the energy of a staircase is believed to have a strong influence on the overall energy of a space.

Want to better understand what your staircase is doing to the energy of your home? Here are some key points to consider when it comes to the Feng Shui of stairs.

Placement

In Feng Shui, stairs do a great deal to carry energy in a home. Because of their ability to carry excess energy, this can put strain and stress on your life, depending on where the stairs are placed in your home. For example, looking at the bagua map, the stairs should not be in the center of the home or the health sector. This puts pressure on the health sector of life.

Aside from looking at the bagua map, stairs should not be placed directly in front of the main entrance to the home, as this creates issues in terms of the energy flow, causing energy to escape the home.

Shape

The shape of the staircase can also affect the energy in a space. Straight staircases create very fast moving energy and can be an issue for most homes. The similar energy is present in spiral staircases. The best type of staircase for your home's Feng Shui is a stair that curves slightly with landings to help slow down the qi (or energy) flow.

Other things to consider with stair shape are the tread and riser sizes. A short staircase with tall risers for example create unstable qi, where a longer staircase with wider treads helps to slow down the qi flow.

Material

In Feng Shui, the five elements are a founding principle and help in influencing the energy of a home for harmony and balance. Your stair's material also plays a role in the energy of your home. Wood stairs bring movement, growth, and warmth into a space, while metal staircases add focus and clarity. Knowing what material to use based on your home's bagua map, your own energy, and the intention of the space is important in deciding which material to use for your stairs.

Overall, the key to using staircases in feng shui is to be mindful of their placement and how they affect the flow of energy in a space. By following these principles, you can use your staircase to create a sense of balance and harmony within your home.
